Gold nugget plecos

I've tried twice now with a gold nugget and they always die on me right around 6-8 weeks of having them my water is perfect all other fish are thriving. With the second one I made the tank around him everything was right for him according to my research and advice. Are these guys usually hard to get to stay alive? Or am I just buying from the wrong place? They coast 30$ and for some reason I am really attracted to them and will prolly keep trying. This second one was from pet supply first one I kinda knew was unhealthy when it came in his head was sunken a lil.

Algae wafers, shrimp pellets , cucumber, once in while tubifex also freeze dried blood worms and there's drift wood in the tank was told he would nibble for say at it.
