golden mystery snail

My mom got one of these today and I thought that these types of snails have to have a male and a female to reproduce, but the dumb people at the lfs said NO, no, no this one will lay eggs all by it self and they will take over the tank. Is this true??

P. bridgessi - Golden Apple snail, does require a mate to reproduce. This is true of mystery snails as well, since they are of a similar genus.

The only snails that I know of that reproduce asexually are ramshorns and probably pond snails.

Yep, it's true they do need both sexes in order to mate. But, it's possible for the female to carry fertile eggs for a good while after mating and she can lay more than once with each mating. So, don't be shocked to find some eggs. They will lay above the water line and can be removed easily. They are pretty firm and all in a bunch that can be scraped off very easily. These snails can also leave the tank in search of a laying spot and can live up to two weeks out of water in some cases. Great snails though. I haven't found anything they won't eat.
