My son moved into a 'new' house that has an aquarium
with goldfish. The family who moved out left the fish behind. Somebody told us he couldn't have other kinds of fish in with the goldfish.
Why is that? What other kind of creatures can be in the tank? Are
algae eaters OK?

My guess is that gold fish are cold water fish. (ie they don't need a heater to keep the water at 75* F)

Adding tropical fish to a cold water tank would be detriminatal to their health. As adding gold fish to a tropical tank would not be good either.

This is because fish are cold blooded. They metabolize food depending on the temperature of the body. Since the body is regulated according to the temp of the water a tropical fish in cold water would be slow and sluggish. Their immune system would also be lower so they would be more succptible to disease.

I have to say SHAME on the people who left the fish in the house. How big is the tank? Congrads to you for wanting to keep them alive.

Kudos to you!
