why do goldfish change colors?

my sisters Commons and comets change colors from orange to white and back... sometimes their whole bodies sometimes its just partial

Hi! There are a bunch of factors that play into a goldfish turning colors. Genetics is a big one- goldfish are known to become whiter as they age. Exposure or lack of exposure to sunlight also influences coloring. Fish exposed to natural light tend to produce more pigmentation. In the case of your sisters fish, its most likely a third cause which is water quality & diet. Poor water quality, stress, overcrowding, & insufficent/poor diet all influence color (or lack of color) as well. Her fish losing color is indicative of some serious tank issues which we already know exist. Hope this helps!
