This could happen with two males in the same tank.

I have a gold male. 3 dwarfs. I think 2 male 1 female. How do you tell what gender they are?
 
Males are bright and vibrant, the female are more dull. Store usually carry mostly males because they're more colorful.
 
Ok I think I'll keep an eye on him. The 2 dwarf males are the ones that have been nipped. The female hasn't been nipped at all.
 
Hmmm... A possibility, a small one at that, is something ive had before. The platys could be identifying the bright colors of the male dwarfs as other male platys, and would therefore nip them. I had an issue like this with a flame dwarf and sunburt platy. However, i wouldnt put much merit into this idea. I'm just trying to gather possibilities. Whoa. Just sounded like my science teacher there. not a good sign...
