Gourami/Plant question for a newb

I'm considering a dwarf species for my new 20g planted. My question is about the floating plants I've read they prefer in their environment. Is it a necessity? What types are easiest that will grow horizontally? Thanks!

They're not a necessity, but they do tend to help the gourami feel more confident and make them less likely to hide. Frogbit is my personal favorite, but water lettuce, water sprite, etc all work equally well.
