Sand is only 1-2" deep I have a wooden oar/paddle in the tank The actual paddle is is where I discovered it. There were some spots that fell in? Like the sand caved in on itself I stirred it up just to see what was goin on and uncovered a huge amount of grayish sand under the surface

I've heard of a really toxic "grayish " bacteria that can grow in sand. Kindaaaaaaaa worried

Ok so far I have read this: you need 3-4 inches of sand to produce the toxins and the fish would be gasping at the top of the tank if the toxins were in the tank. I would do a couple of water changes and make sure to stir the sand up, just in case. If your fish seem normal, I would just keep an eye on them.
