I am in no way a guppy expert and I am fairly new to the hobby as well, but I have guppies in a tank with sand and they seem to be doing really well.

Sand or gravel. It doesn't matter. They spend most of their time in the top half of the tank. IMO you only have to worry about substrate if the fish you are keeping dig or live on it.
