half coconut shell in fw tank

I am having a discussion with my 11 year old. I have a half a coconut shell that I want to put moss in the top of and put in my new 29g tank. My 11 y/o seems to think that it "shouldn't be done" for some reason. I know I have seen it on this forum in someone's tank....
It will be okay to do that won't it?
Please help settle this "disagreement" between me and my 11 y/o.......thanks!
