I was wondering if a 100 watt heater is too much for a 10 gallon tank? I am getting one to set up as a hospital/QT tank (will thoroughly clean between uses).

My concern is that if I need to raise the temp to 86 or so for ICH in the winter time, a 50 watt heater won't keep up since room temp is around 70 deg. On the other hand, I don't want to fry them in the summer if using as QT tank set at 80 deg. and the room temp is set at 78 deg.

I have a spare 200 watt heater laying around, but I know that is too much for a 10 gallon. I've been told that it will heat up the water too quickly and get above the set temp and I don't want to have the same problem with the 100 watt.

Thanks for any help.

50 or 100W will do the same... What's important is to keep the temperature stable. Temperature Controller will help.

If it's for keeping the temperature at 23C°, go for the 50W.
