Hi,
This is my first post here, and I just wanted to say HI :D

I also have a question, If a deep sand bed works in a SW aquarium, will it do the same function in a freswater aquarium? I was bored today, and thought of this.

Hi fidojoe and welcome to Aquariumadvice :)

No, I don't think a DSB would work the same in a FW aquarium. LOL Not exactly sure why, but something to do with the anaerobic bacteria.

A DSB in a tank requires a maintanence vrew to work it. In a SW tank that is hermits and snails etc.. I guess if you used a bunch of malaysian trumpet snails it might be okay as they burrow in the sand. The big problem is that DSB's can often lead to buildups of anaerobic gases which is released can kill you whole tank. People do use sand as a substrate in FW tanks but not as deep as the 3-5 inches of a SW DSB. Perhaps 2 inches.

Welcome.

Thanks, I know how a DSB works in SW, but was just curious if it would do the same in FW.
