For a temp holding tank, you can always get a 30-50g Rubbermaid bin or stock tank. Either DIY a Filter or buy one rated for double the size of the bin.

It would be much easier to have stable parameters in a larger volume of water. Depending on your house heat, a Common Pleco may be ok unheated. They are rugged.

Try putting fish on CL or try other fish stores. Cichlid people are often looking for larger Pleco's that will be safe in their big Cichlid tanks.

You can often find great deals on used tanks on craigslist as well. Just buyer beware and try filling it with water before you pay for it.

I like your idea of the rubbermaid bucket but would i need substrate for it? and if i transfer all my fish to it and used the old filter and decorations and sand would that speed up or completely eliminate the cycling time?

Using the old filter should speed things up, but everything else in the tank might speed things up but not likely because the BB mostly lives in the filyer media. If you wanted to speed up the cycle get used media from another tank owner or try your lfs.

You can do bare bottom or a thin layer of sand. If your filter fits on it, it will help cycle the bin, much faster. But that is if your tank IS cycled.

I was suggesting it as a way to split your population. But, yes, you could use it for all.

I still would rehome the Common Pleco, they hit 12-24" and need at least a 125g or a heated pond.

Here are some DIY vids, there are many more.
