Honey gourami mystery death

Hey all.

Well today is a sad day, my HG "Spot" died today.

I had added shrimp to the tank earlier in the day (from a user on here so I know no illness came with them) and after an hour of them being there Spot was laying in the substrate dead.

While I was intro-ing the new shrimp I did spill roughly 200ml of the water they had been shipped in into the tank.

I've tested the water twice-

Ammo 0

Nitrite 0

Nitrate 40

I performed a 60% change just to be sure nothing harmful built up.

Nitrate is now >20ppm.

Help?!

The nitrate seemed a bit high. Some gouramis are really sensitive to nitrite and nitrates. I bet that's what caused it, but it could have just been an illness. Maybe there was alot of nitrate in the shrimp's water?

40 isn't that high though from what I've read.

It'll only have been that high for 2-3 days max, I can't see that being the cause of the death (my opinion of course lol)

My tetra seem none for worse, it's just frustrating to lose a fish I've had for over 6 months so suddenly

Ya gourami's can be sensitive to nitrates. I'm sorry for your loss. I remember when my gourami died due to bloat. Was a sad sad day

I concur with others, Gouramis are very sensitive to nitrates, really sorry for your loss. RIP.

Not to get off topic completely, is your tank planted?

Just thinking variables, my dwarf gourami has been alive and well for a year now. My tank is decently planted, the pic is his tank. I slightly overstocked however I have never once had a nitrate reading over 0. Well maybe during the initial cycle and all. But I think the plants are the reason my gourami is alive and well. Just throwing out ideas.

Tank looks nice, I don't know why you would have a nitrate problem. Im sure someone will help figure out this issue.

I don't have a nitrate problem.

The colour was between 20 and 40.

So it was probably around 30ish, I was a few days late on a water change due to work, it's not that high and it was too short a period for that to play a part.

I honestly believe it had to with the intro of the shrimp or the small amount of their bag water I spilled in the tank...

I'm sorry scouser! poor fella
Just a thought, he didn't choke on a shrimp did he? Honestly nitrates at 20-40ppm shouldn't make a gourami just drop dread like that.

Well, I'm sorry for your gourami that was lost. When you get another, I hope it turns out better.

Oh they can, I saw a episode of river monsters where he caught a vampire fish choking on a smaller vampire fish. Fish are crazy!

For now imma leave the space open, I'm too busy to try to accustom a new fish to the tank (feedin patterns etc)

As for when I'm ready, I have no idea...
