In the past, every aquarium I every saw had a cover or a hood on top of it. Nowadays this has changed and I see many aquariums without covers.

Is there a reason for this or are styles just changing?

It is style and preference. I'll likely get slammed for this, but in my opinion unless you have a display tank in your living room or office hoods and covers are not necessary. I have to say up front, I have a well lit heated fishroom, but not so much as one hood ot glass cover. Most fish don't need that although there are a few execptions.

Bottom line, if you don't want that stuff for the curb appeal don't waste your money.

I agree henning. It's personal preference unless your fish jump a lot. I have a red tail know to be jumpers but have never had a problem without my hood. Also many aftermarket light fixtures aren't compatible like mine so I was forced to take my hood off. But got used to it and enjoy it now without the hood.
