You could use a ruler and a gallon jug during your next water change. Put 5 gallons in and see how much the level rises. If it goes up, say, 2 inches and your tank is 16" tall, it's a 40.

Or liters and centimeters..

Haha yea I just used containers filled it up and just counted how much I put it

I wish I could just do that but it's a tank on craigslist I was looking at to upgrade from my 29g, but then I realized it was a reptile tank.
