Hello all,

I believe that my tank is fully cycled, but I wonder how to bring down my nitrate levels (besides regular water changes). My current levels:

ammonia: 0 ppm
nitrite: 0 ppm
nitrate: 40 ppm

I don't think I overfeed my fish. I have a couple of live plants in there and regularly I have to scrape some 'brown' spots from the glass, which is probably algae. (I have heard that algae thrive on nitrate).

Any advice is welcome.

Actually, 40 ppm isn't too high.
Have you tested your tap water? Some people have reported nitrate in their tap water.
Live plants and green algae will soak up excess nitrates.
The brown 'algae' is actually diatoms. It's pretty common in newish tanks and should eventually go away on its own.

I agree, and don't think there is a thing wrong with your situation. I am sure your fish are quite happy, so rock on!

Those diatoms will gradually dissipate as the tank ages.
