How to keep dirft wood down???

You need to soak it until it is waterlogged. Dry wood won't sink. You can tie it to a rock, if you want, but new wood also leaches colour, a lot of colour, for some time. Turns water yellow or brown, which most fish like, but unless it's an Amazon tank, most of us don't much like the colour.
Boiling it will remove some colour and help waterlog it. Leaving it in a bucket weighted with rocks will waterlog it eventually too. It can take awhile, depending what kind of wood it is and how dry it is.
