I got a 150 watt heater for a 10 gallon

It depends how cold the room that they are in gets. If gets 30f or less than your target tank temperature than you should be good.

Otherwise, you will have two issues with an oversized heater. The first is if you can get it to fit in the tank physically. The second is that if it "fails on" it will have the ability to make the water really, really hot.
 
I'd get a smaller heater. Thats way too big.

We have a 100w in a 10g. It gets pretty cold in the winter, down to about 64f sometimes. We have an Aquenon pro. It's very reliable and consistent.

Of course you should always have a thermometer in tank and monitor the temperature that way, don't rely on the # you set the heater dial on!

A 100w or a 50w would probably be sufficient. I agree that 150w is probably too much.
