Just some questions for my Tiger Barb setup

So I'm planning on getting a bigger tank for my Tiger Barbs and am wondering what would be a good maximum number of barbs for the tank. The dimensions are 36Lx20Hx14W (inches) the capacity is about 42 gallons but with the displacement of stuff like substrate and driftwood it will have about 36 gallons of water in it. I'll be using a canister filter with three media baskets and a flow rate of 1200lph (or 317gph) which is a turnover of around 8.8.

So yeah just wondering how many Tiger Barbs would be good for this tank, are there any other nice fish that are compatible with these guys once they're in a decent school, and if so how many of those could I also keep, and recommendations for medias to use in the three baskets are also welcomed, however I hear just trying stuff and seeing what works for you is the best approach.
