I've been thinking how to make a lagoon effect in my 47 gal tank. As I know cichlids have a rep for pulling up live plants so I was thinking of doing something different.

My plan is to get a long piece of light bog or drift wood, make a channel on the top with a lip so it's like a hook or drill through it. Get some tough suction cups one either side if the tank length ways, then run a piece of fishing line or fish safe metal through the wood or hooked under the lip and hook the metal or tie the line to the suction cups. So now we have a piece of wood suspended across the tank.

Then I was going to tie a plant that dangles down to the wood all the way across the wood so it's like an underwater lagoon.

Are there any plants that prefer to droop this way and not head towards the light?

Do you thing this could work?

Thanks it looks good. Where do you source this? It's too specialist for my LFS can you get it from a garden centre? Will it grow just being tied to the wood?
