Yes lava rock is safe for aquariums, i have a 110 gallon tank with lava rock and it looks great and I've never had a problem with it before!

I have a 70g full of it. It can have sharp edges but I've never had a problem.

I have bits of lava rock in my 2nd 10 gallon planted tank and don't seem to have any trouble either!
