We're FINALLY getting around to starting that 55 gallon tank (it has been sitting in my kitchen empty for nearly three weeks). We plan to keep Lake Tanzanyikan cichlids in it.

In searching for an interesting substrate, we came across "Lava Sand" at Lowe's. Its basically finely ground lava rock and it has a reddish-black color. I know that black sand is volcanic, but this has more of a reddish color to it.

Has anyone ever seen or used this? It doesn't appear to have sharp edges at all. It really is the consistency of regular sand. They sell it as a soil amendment and its supposed to be very porous (almost makes me wonder if it would be great in a planted tank).

Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated!
