"follow the instructions" it really is important to wait 5 minutes before reading final results. This refers to API Test Kit. Big difference between 2 minutes and 5 minutes. I thought I was trough my cycle, but it turns out I'm getting close, but not done.

How many times do men need to be told "read the instructions".

Each step is written on the back of the color card of all API test kits. Some dual bottle kits require you shake the sample twice, after the first bottle and after the second.

GH and KH and PH is instant reading, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates usually take 5 minutes for the reaction to be complete.

Nitrate bottle #2 from API must be shaken a LOT before using.
API Nitrate test kit doesn't work under 5-10ppm.

API ammonia test sometime give a false 0.25ppm ammonia reading.

API PO4 test kit require lot of phosphates in the water before you get a reading.

If not sure about the steps to follow, RTFM.
