Is 9 am to 10 pm too long for my aquarium light to be on?

I would not say so.
I think it might depend on your livestock selection, plant needs (assuming you had plants), power of the light (might cause temperature fluctuation)
I have a 55 gallon tank that came with the lights and hood (it was a ensemble kit/package i bought from petsmart) and I leave it on easily approx 12 hours a day. As long as you are letting your fish have some sort of night time cycle it should be fine.
