So I had set up a 1.5 gallon holding tank about a month ago to hold 1-2 guppies for a few days. All it had in it was a plastic rock formation and an unused lime wood air diffuser for bubbles. The guppies were taken out and put elsewhere and I never ended up taking down this holding tank. Since then, it seems it has cycled! And the air diffuser now looks like this. What happened to it? It looks like mold, but I've read that people have used lime wood for long periods of time without it going bad like this. Another limewood air diffuser turned like this in one of my main tanks too, but after 3.5 months. I removed that one, and plan to remove this one, but I was wondering if I should expect this to happen every couple months.
