I moved into a new house several months ago and started to re-stock my tank. All I had was a big danio so I bought this fish from the pet store. He was little when I got him about 3 months ago. I do not remember what he was called but it was not a cichlid, jack dempsey, or oscar. He was labeled as "semi- aggressive" and compatible with community fish such as tetras, etc. He grew to 4 inches very fast and he is big. This past weekend I bought 3 more fish to go in with him, a red tailed shark, a smaller fish which I thought would be ok as I have a lot of plants and hiding places in my 55g tank, and a pearl gourami which was almost as big as he is. Well, lesson learned, he ate both the smaller fish and the gourami already. He doesn't bother the shark. Can anyone tell me what I "inherited"? I am afraid he was mislabeled and now I am stuck with him. What other types of fish can I stock my tank with with him in there now? If I have to I could try and re-home him I guess. I am not "new" to keeping fish and not looking for any type of lecture just some identification and advice. Thank you in advance.

Looks like a jack Dempsey but hard to tell without a full picture. You cant put much else with it in a 55. Tanks too small.

Yes when I put that in a search engine and look at pics that's what it looks like. Definitely not what it was labled as. The thing is a bully. Thank you very much

You could try some congo tetras or a convict should be able to stand up to it.
