Live rock isn't a rock or stone at all. It's actually calcium carbonate which is really dead coral skeletons.

Dolomite

Would this be the same stuff we use to use in the African cichlids tanks that we purchased as dolomite ?

Nope. Dolomite and live rock are completely different things.

As dodiddly said, live rock is nothing but a growth of coral skeletons. It is used almost exclusively in salt water tanks.

Why do you ask?
