Looks like some type of domestic hardwood to me.

It is pretty uncommon to see Malaysian mounted to slate since it is heavy enough to sink on its own.

I live in Louisville Kentucky. Purchased it from a pet store, though.

I'm the one that put it on the slate, and broke the slate in half during the process. I wanted to decrease any risk of my fish knocking it over and breaking through glass. Hadn't attempted to soak it beforehand to check if it did float or not.
