I'm toying with the idea of slowly lowering my pH from 7.5 to 7.
I'm thinking a small amount of peat in a bag in the canister filter.
Is there a formula to work out how much peat is needed to lower pH in a 200 litre thank?

Driftwood in your tank will lower it . Let the tannins release into your tank ☺

Hello Cam...

It's best not to try to change the water chemistry. It's unlikely you'll be able to maintain it. This usually isn't good for the fish. Unless your plan is to keep and breed rare fish, you don't need to worry about the makeup of the tap water. The fish will get used to most public water supplies. A pH in the 6.5 to 8 range is fine for most aquarium fish.

A steady water chemistry is better for the fish than a particular chemistry.

Just a thought. You're the water keeper.

Cheers for the advise.

Got lots of driftwood already. Bizarrely it hadn't made any difference whatsoever on the ph.

I'll give the peat a swerve then. Can't sniff at 7.5. Cheers.

What does keeping and breeding "rare" fish have to do with the ph? There are plenty of common fish that would prefer softer water. The op only wants to drop to the neutral range, problems really only arise when you try to a ph below 6.

Test your kh or even better the tds, it will greatly effect your ability to soften the water. If those numbers are high you can dilute change water with ro water which will lower the tds and soften the water in the tank.
