Moving Bed Filter

Hey Guys, I know this is somewhat of an odd wuestion but I would like to try and make a moving bed filter as a "prototype" and for how cheap I am. I was thinking of using drinking straws cut up into 1/2" tubes or so. Would this make an effective filter? Would it work? Anth thoughts?
