my betta won't eat his bloodworms?

My betta is about 3-4 inches long, he's male, and he will only eat flakes. I try to feed him vary his diet, with betta bits, and he doesn't want, I try to feed him freeze-dried bloodworms and he doesn't want. He seems to be having trouble fitting these down his hatch but I'll mash up the bloodworms and he still doesn't want them. Can my betta stay healthy on just flakes?
