new 30gallon tank help

So I'm getting a new 30g tank and I wanna put sand in it. So my questions are...

1. Is sand the same thing as substrate.
2. How do I vacuum/clean the sand.
3. How will the sand/substrate effect my HOB filters.
4. Once again thanks for any and all help

Hello there!

1. Yes, I assume sand is the same thing as a substrate. Some plants actually grow better in sand.
2. Just vacuum lightly hovering over the sand (making sure not to suck up any sand) kind of depends on which kind of sand you get... some are heavier than others... Ex. PFS and Play Sand
3. Unless the in-take tube of your HOB is right at the level of the sand, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you're really worried you could try tying some of that foam mesh (sorry forgot what it is called) to the in-take.
