So I'm starting a new 20 gallon fresh water and to help start the cycle I will be putting in some gravel, filter material, and plants from an already cycled tank. I will most likely do a fishless cycle.

So the question, do I need to add bacteria starter if I'm already "seeding" my tank from another cycled tank?

greetings.

the purpose of "bacteria starters" is to try to speed up the cycling process, however, you are already doing this by using already cycled filter material. so i hardly think it is neccessary.

however, note that those fishless cycles need an ammonia source (if i remember correctly)

So would you think the bacteria starter or the seeded material would be best for the cycle?

seeded material. the general consensus on bacteria starters is that you might get lucky and it works, or it doesn't actually work.
