If you are ever in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, there is a place called Shipwreck that has a lot of driftwood. Shipwreck is located in Nags Head near the bridge that leads to Roanoke Island/Manteo. Prices go from $1-$30 a piece and size from < 1' to 2-3' or more. The shop also sells sea shells and beach decor. For the past few years my wife has been picking up a few large interesting pieces for the garden. While I was there I saw a fellow fill up a minivan with DW.
As for the exact type of driftwood, I am not sure. I am assuming they are from trees indigenous to the Carolina coast. I picked up 3 small (~1') pieces for a buck a piece. I boiled them and I am currently soaking them. Not sure what I will do with them since I have recently scaped both of my tanks.
If you are in the area, check it out.
