Oceanic biocube

Hi,
The space for my tank is limited and I was wondering if anyone has used the Oceanic biocube 14 gallon as a freshwater tank?

If so what did you have to do to make the filter usable in freshwater?

I just turned my 29cube into a freshwater, I put a filter pad from my other filter in there and the biowheel, but I don't know what to use the back for either, curious to see if others are using it and what for. Someone suggested for the CO2 difusser, the only problem with that is I can't see if CO2 is coming out or not if it is hidden in the back.
