planted aquarium

Ive read up on planted aquarium and I understand sand is the ideal substrate here but is it possible to have a small planted aquarium with gravel substrate?

Gravel works but try to get some with smaller grain size. What type lighting are you using as that is what determines what plants will grow in the tank.
