Is it possible to have plants that grow and thrive well with their roots planted in sand?

Aquarium Advice

Absolutely. Just pluck some quality root tabs in there for added nutrition.

Thanks was worried as I have added blank sand in my tank and it would be a total waste of money if I had to remove it

No...it's not as good as a planted substrate but it can be done.

It depends on your goal.

I have sand, plants, and root tabs and everything does very well.

If I had a high tech show tank, I'd want other substrate.

In nature that is the kind of stuff plants wood root in. A sandy dirt like substrate.

In my tank I have dirt with a thick sand cap.
