Is it normal for a male platy to reside in a cave? I've never seen it before.

Is he being harassed by another male? Or is he just chilling in there? If he's not showing any signs of stress or disease I wouldn't worry about it.

One of my platies chills under a dw cave all the time. He is healthy and comes out to eat actively
