I've never used a power head on fresh water. I've used them on all my reef tanks. I notice that when refilling during a water change a lot of fish in my 50 gal community tank love to play in the fast current. What do you that about a small power head?

I use a Koralia nano, I think the smaller of the two, in my 75 gal just to increase water flow. It's held up really well and adds enough circulation to get rid of dead spots left from the canister filter outflow. I think they are pretty cheap as well, maybe $20 on amazon.

Long story short, if your inhabitants seem to enjoy the flow, you probably couldn't go wrong adding a bit more I'd think.

I have an undergravel filter and I use two powerheads with it. That along with a hob filter keep my tank looking great. The extra water flow adds oxygen to the tank.
