Problem Cleaning Tank

I use a python to clean my 55 gal with pool filter sand substrate. When i vaccum the sand it actually sucks the sand right up right to the sink so i tryed using a normal gravel vac and just putting teh hose into a big tub then dumping teh tub after but it did the exact same thing. The lython worked fine with my old gravel so is there a trick to cleaning sand?

mostly just wave the end of the wand over the sand to stir it up and the detrius will float up and into the python.

And you can use the shut off valve on the python, close it alittle at a time until the water flow is slow enough not to pull the sand up.
