Even as a new aquarist, I've been seeing a lot about using small amounts of aquarium salt as a medicine for sick freshwater fish.

What's the difference between aquarium salt and kosher, non-iodized salt?

Aquarium salt for saltwater tanks has a lot of minerals in it. It is harvested from ocean water or has added stuff to make regular salt into ocean salt. Kosher salt has only small amount of minerals besides sodium in it. For treatment of disease Kosher salt work just fine. Usual dosage is a tablespoon per 5 gallons of water. You need to do a water change before adding another dose or the salt will build up to unsafe for fish levels. Salt is a good first step for treating disease before going on to other medications.
