Question about transporting fishies!

First off- I hope everyone has a very merry christmas =o)

Okay, Ive read some things about transporting their fish across many states, but I only have to travel about 30-45min.

I won this on ebay- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ory=20755&rd=1

and I'm not sure how to go about transporting it all.

I would like to keep a majority of the water in the tank so the fish don't completely freak out with new water conditions, or does that matter?

Also, there are so many fish Im going to have to deal with I don't think I can catch them all to put them somewhere.

Any help is appreciated!

The actual transportation is fairly easy. Keep the fish in large Rubbermaind containers or coolers. Rinse out the container many times to make sure they are safe for use with the fish. Whichever you use, fill it almost to the top with water (to prevent sloshing) and make sure the lid is on tight. A battery powered air stone is a good idea, but not needed with only a 30 minutes drive. I would not worry about getting all the water, half should be fine. Keep the filter sponges wet when you are driving too, with that many fish in the tank, I bet the s filter media is packed with bio bugs.

That tank is extremely overstocked. Before picking up everything, try to find a home or LFS to take most of the fish in the tank. Looks like there will be at least 65 fish in the tank, and it could be upwards of 100 total fish...

Well congratulations on your winning bid! I think you got a great deal. I agree that the tank is overstocked, but you probably knew that! I have done this before and with this short a drive you should have no troubles. Try to empty the tank as much as possible of all material prior to moving, and just keep everything wet. You should be in good shape.

I just moved my fish and tanks 5 hours and had no problems. Since they were all small I put them in ice cream containers half full of water and then put plants in as well for comfort. I left only a little bit of water in the tank (maybe 10%) to keep everything wet.

I wouldn't fill the rubbermaid containers. The sloshing won't be that bad and the amount that much water weighs will make it pretty darn hard to transport. Also don't keep too much in the tank or the pressure from the weight and the lifting might end up breaking a seal or worse a piece of glass. That tank full of water will weigh close to 400 pounds.
