Question about using Poly Fiber Pads for filter media

I have a Aqua Clear 110/500 filter on a 55gal Aquaium. My LFS suggested that when the time comes to replace my carbon that I go to a Poly Fiber pad in place of the carbon pad. He said that it would improve the clearity of my water. I dont really trust my LFS anymore since I've been on AA. I would still leave the Sponge on the bottom and the Bio-Rings on the top but just not use the Carbon. Does anyone have any recommendations on this? I'm not real sure what to do when the time comes to replace the carbon.

Thanks.

Unless you need the carbon the poly fiber would be ok. It will strain out the finer bits in your water. Perhaps I should mention that you can also use 100% polyester pillow batting and its much cheeper.

I don't use carbon pads in my filter as a rule. They're good at removing medication and funky smells, but then they should be promptly removed or replaced.

If you use polyfill fiber, make sure it has not been treated with Microban, or some other anti-bacterial/anti-fungal agent! Another option is to buy a sheet of air filter material at a home improvement store and cut a pad to size. Again, be sure to avoid any product that has been chemically treated.
