Question regarding water treatment

I have a question about tap water conditioner. I have a120 gallon tank. If I do a partial water change and add 40 gallons of clean tap water, do I treat for 40 gallons or120 gallons? Thanks. Also, if filling directly from the faucet, do i test before, during or after I put the clean water in? Thanks!

If you're treating the tap water in buckets before you're adding to the tank, you treat based on the volume of water in the bucket. If you're using a python water changer or equivalent, you treat the tap based on the volume of the entire tank... with the latter option, which I'm guessing is most likely what you're doing based on the large size of your aquarium (unless you like carrying a lot of buckets back and forth for fitness...lol), you should break up the doses of dechlor in several installments as you're 're-filling the tank.

Edit: test water before partial water changes. after, like days later to see how params are after things settle... unless, you have mysterious elevated levels of anything, then you can test your tap as a control to determine a possible cause, or process of elimination.

Thanks, Brian_Nano 12 g, I appreciate it. I used buckets, and just treated for that amount until the last water change, when I attached hose to faucet and filled directly from tap. The idea of installments is a good one! I have a couple of small clown loaches and I was a little worried about harming them.
