this is a 30 gallon tank with 5 buenos aires tetras, 3 tiger barbs, 5 java loaches, one gourami, and a small Chinese algae eater. and some snails.

Well, I would up the school of barbs to 5 and get rid of the CAE. A picture would be nice to be able to give more advice.

Yup. Double or triple the barbs, lose the CAE, and bump up the tetras, imo.
