I have heard that some people mix sand with gravel for a substrate. When I gravel vac...I GRAVEL VAC. Really dig down to get the junk out.

When you mix sand with the gravel, how do you vac without removing all of the sand?

I personally wouldn't recommend mixing it if you really GRAVEL VAC. Since the sand and gravel would mix together, it would be very hard to get the poop cleaned up. You'd only be able to gently put the siphon on the top of the substrate, which would mean fish poop and other things would sift their way down through the gravel and sand. The only possible way to go about doing this, would be to research " Under Gravel Jets" on the internet, or even here. With the use of a power head they keep the current moving so barely any food/fish poop/etc falls on the substrate.
Its your choice tho, I know if it were me, I wouldn't mix it.
