Once I ditch my UGF when I clean my tank, I'm gonna replace my gravel with some sand substrate b/c I think my loaches will like it better. Can anyone recommend a good sand substrate? I want something functional and attractive.

Pool filter sand, play sand, sand from the lfs. Just make sure that it is not treated with any checmicals. The sand from the lfs is more expensive. We got 150 lbs of sand for $45 from a pool supply store.

I would say stick with the pool filter sand because it has NO sharp edges which can where down the loaches barbells. It is totally rounded. I got mine in a 50 lb sack for like $15.

I just changed my grit out for sand in anticipation of getting loaches.

the sand I used on my 20 long (my 2 horseface loaches love the sand!) was black onyx sand by Seachem. It looks wonderful, the grains are not too small and it's also good if you are thinking about using live plants.
