Some shrimp are good tank mates too, as long as they have a few hiding places.
 
Yes my cherries were decimated by my beta as well. I wonder if it has to do with their red color.
 
All Bettas are different I have had ones in community tanks no problem and I have had ones where they were in their own tank by themselves. If you are gonna try to put a betta with other species of fish I would have a back up tank set up just on case it does not work out. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
 
Thanks for all tge replies. I might just get a betta and a small pleco for now. I plan on gettin a bigger tank soon

A Pitbull Pleco might be the only one that could work in that size tank.

You don't need an Algae Eater. In a properly balanced planted tank you don't see much if any algae.

The tank is about 70 litres. That is about 15 gallons isnt it?
