Whilst at my lfs, the guy recommended sand for my tank, my dad, being cheap, asked if silica sand would be okay from a buliders merchants. The guy googled it and said it might work, i just dont want to do anything that would kill my fish, would it be safe?

I've heard of people using playground sand, have to clean it extremely well though

Sand is fine. "Silica sand" is likely a reference to what most people here call pool filter sand and there are no chemicals in it. You'll want to rinse it thoroughly, though. I'd put it in a bucket (say, 5 pounds at a time) and swish it around with a hose until the water runs clear.
