Silicone grease vs. vaseline

Which is better for lubing a filter impeller/impeller shaft: silicone grease or Vaseline? I've always used Vaseline and never had a problem, but there are people out there that prefer silicone grease and advise others to use it over Vaseline. I want to hear your thoughts.
